Dedication in Berlin
Friends, it is good to gather with you in this special place.
As Berlin celebrates 25 years since the fall of the Wall, as we have returned and experienced a reunified Berlin, and as we have stood shoulder to shoulder with other Berliners, whose lives were deeply impacted by these events long after we left here...
And as we remember the role that our country, and indeed, our parents, played in securing Freedom...we come together to honor a friend, Elizabeth Wood, who is, no doubt, with us today in spirit.
Her loving parents, Col. and Mrs. Robert Wood, have asked that we release a small lock of her beautiful red hair in the places that meant so much to her: NYC, Hawaii and here in her beloved Berlin.
Here, she spent her formative years, where she lived and learned and loved, along with her sister Suzanne and her brother Rob, and Rob's future wife, Charlotte...making incredible memories their family would treasure.
Here with Elizabeth, we learned the value of a real-world education, the honor and responsibility of being an American...here, where friendships were formed that have endured for a lifetime.
The fall of the Wall marked the end of an era. But today we celebrate not the ends, but the ways in which we move forward...strengthened by the unique ties that bind us, even to this day, forever shaped by the history and the freedoms that we shared together.
So, for Elizabeth... [Release locks]
Here's to Freedom!
May your spirit dwell also in this place, and know that our love goes with you.
